After 20 years working in PR (public relations), I know that true media relationships are important. Below are some tips to help make those relationships more meaningful:

1. Be a consumer of news. This advice is foundational to working in PR.

2. Follow reporters on social media. You will be able to keep up with their recent stories, and you may also find out something you have in common.

3. Remember details. When you meet people, truly listen … and remember. You will have something to talk about the next time you see them.

4. Share their work. Story engagement can mean a lot.
