Texans for the Right to Read is encouraging residents of the Lone Star State to learn about influential libraries, starting with the oldest in Texas.
The Dr. Eugene Clark Library is a unique and historically significant edifice built in 1899 with a $10,000 bequest from its namesake who, upon his deathbed, dictated a will specifying citizens should have a library and lyceum.
President William Howard Taft once graced its storied stage, as did actress Dorothy Sarnoff who quipped: “If you are bored with my performance tonight, you can grab a good book to read.”
